Pumpkin Patch

We took a trip to our local pumpkin patch last week and picked out some great pumpkins.

Pumpkins arranged to say "BOO"

We saw some unusual looking pumpkins too. Some were all white, some were all green and some looked like little hats. Later we found out that the weird hat-looking pumpkins were actually squash and that they are called Turk’s Cap.

Turk's Cap

These medium sized squash have a mainly orange top that looks like the top crown of a standard pumpkin and the underside has a variety of different colored knobs. The Turk’s Caps we saw had all of the fall colors and will make a perfect fall decoration piece for their homes or for their heads.

One of our residents, Carmen, had never been to a pumpkin patch before and was a little confused on what the etiquette was for such a trip. In the end she was delighted to see all of the different kinds of pumpkins and squash. Carmen even took home one little orange pumpkin and one of the Turk’s Cap squash.

We got our pumpkins home safely so that they could be ready to be decorated for next week's pumpkin decorating craft event.

The quick trip to our local pumpkin patch was good first experience for one, a learning experience for some and an overall great experience for all those who attended.

Villa Serena Won't Be Hit By The Flu Bug

Flu season is here and the single best way to protect yourself and others against the flu is to get vaccinated each year. The “flu season” is said to start as early as October and lasts as late as May.

Villa Serena residents have already gotten their flu shots done in the first week of October! We took a few bus trips over to the nearest hospital’s flu clinic on Tuesday and had an on-site clinic yesterday.

The influenza infection affects people differently but is a serious disease that can lead to hospitalization or worse and we want to keep our residents and  staff here at Villa Serena healthy.

Our residents were brave.       Our staff, not so brave....

Thank you to the ladies from Walgreens
who came out to give us our flu shots!
